While I love to talk tech talk with the best of them, I do understand that it is a whole other language.  This glossary is my interpretation of terms translated into what my clients say are easier to understand words in plain English.

Web Page – A webpage is one page of a website.  They are the building blocks of a website. This is what people see when they type in your domain name, your home page.

Website - The place connected to the internet that shows images, text, and media about you or your business on the world wide web (www). Is a collection of web pages as a collection under one domain name.

Domain Name- The address that people go to to view your website.

Hosting - The building/place that holds and stores your website software, content and data.

SEO – SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.  It's the process of moving up or down the visibility of a website and/or web page in a web search engine's unpaid results.  It is often referred to as "natural", "organic", or "earned" results.  Your websites SEO is very important to being found on the web.

SSL certificate - SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It's a form of website security that creates an encrypted link between a web browser and a server. An SSL certificate appears as a little green lock in the left corner of your website URL and is bought and added to a website's URL.

Web Search Engine – A Search engine is a software system that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are generally presented in a line of results.  The most common search engine’s are Google, Bing, Safari and Yahoo.  So when you say you “googled something.” you used a search engine to find a website about the topic you typed in.
